Introduction Mostly, people visiting a new place may be as normal visitors of even tourists may need assistance on the best way to go especially in their general interactions with people of that country. They may also need guidance on the hotels to visit, the best places to book for accommodations and also different maps to different destinations according to the schedules during the visit. Visitor information centers, therefore, serve as the best access points for these important details so as to give clear guidance to the visitors and ensure that they meet their visit targets, (Gross, Brown, 2006). Don’t waste time! Our writers will create an original "Report – Evaluation of two Visitor Information Centres" essay for you Create order This evaluation, therefore, targets on evaluating the services offered in two visitor information centers and to reveal the difference in the way they offer services to the people visiting them for such guidelines. The two visitor information centers to be evaluated therefore are; The Adelaide Visitor Information Centre and the McLaren Vale and Fleurieu Visitor Information Centre. This evaluation will be meant to compare the services offered at the two visitor information centers and their convenience to the visiting tourists. Therefore the type of services offered and the level at which the two centers operate will be majorly the guiding factors towards achieving the desired goal of the evaluation. To begin with, in the Adelaide visitor information center, assistance was offered to the local visitors, interstate, and people visiting from the overseas and whereby this information center is packaged with people with a lot of knowledge serving in both the offices and also in providing services such the tour guidelines. These staffs give the visitors directions, maps as well as event guide or even help them to plan for their journeys so as to make their best out of their time in the place. Since getting into a better position to know a city or even a new place can take time even when one has been equipped with the best research and planning, one may find the need to seek for guidance or even extra help on the same from a knowledgeable and a well-informed person and which probably should be a local from that place (Fesenmaier, 1994). This is majorly the reason why Adelaide visitor information center has worked tirelessly to ensure the effectiveness of their services to the visitors in need of any information concerning the country and the possible areas of visitation. On the other hand, McLaren Vale and Fleurieu Visitor information center reveals its effectiveness through providing a better starting point for one to begin their exploration of the international region. This information center is fully accredited for this business as it provides excellence in the field of visitor servicing and they have very friendly volunteer staff which has given its full commitment and attention to ensuring that visitors coming to their country through the McLaren Vale information center are comfortable and make their best out of the trip. They, therefore, provide reliable accommodation services to the visiting tourists, information, and advice as well (Gross, Brown, 2006). They also help their visitors and help them view the ever varying exhibitions and displays or have an access to their gift shops which is packaged with a wide variety of the local produce. The effectiveness of this cafe is also revealed by the fact that its located in the center which therefo re creates a great opportunity to have a test on the feeling of visiting some of these regions. The friendly and knowledgeable staff have a very good local understanding and therefore help one in finding fun things for the moments spent there to be great and memorable. They also have gardens where kids can play as one keeps a close eye on their movements. From a customers perspective, these two sites may differ in a way as they have different levels of services offered. The products provided as well may bring their difference to a greater extent. On the basis of these considerations of the services offered between the two and making their comparisons, the customers settle at a particular on which site to visit for the information. Their effectiveness as well may count and the type of staff employed to take care of the visitors needs during their trips. Therefore, in the case of the Adelaide information center, they offer a free guided walk by their knowledgeable staff around the place. This is normally referred to as the first steps and therefore serve as an introduction to the visitors so as to have a knowledge of the city before they proceed to their sites of interest (Fesenmaier, 1994). During these introduction steps in the free walk, the guiding staff highlight several important aspects of the city such as the major attraction si tes, public means of transport around and where to access them, also, the current events in different attraction sites so as to enable the visitor to make informed decisions on the best places to visit. There is also a variety of free computers for the visitors to use and where they can even book most of the services online including their accommodation and may be travel documents, something which is a great privilege on the customers perspective and may, therefore, motivate them towards frequently visiting this specific information center. On the contrary, the McLaren Vale and Fleurieu Visitor information center provide their services to prove their effectiveness towards the customers needs in their own way and give the visitors a better starting point to their exploration in the city and the attraction sites. They have also ensured a friendly and knowledgeable staff which provides up to date information and the prevailing trends in the various attraction sites. Additionally, they have an added advantage at their customers disposal whereby they offer accommodation and booking services for their customers holiday meetings and refreshment needs, with ever changing and updated art exhibitions as well as displays stocked with a variety of local products (Tripp and Great house, 1995). Moreover, in the case whereby the visitors have kids, there is a provision of safe gardens where they can play within the reach of the parents so as to keep an eye on them as they enjoy themselves at the same time. Their cafes menu offer a var iety and a reliable good choice of meals for their visitors at any time. Therefore, according to the opinions of the customers who have ever visited these sites, the experience is such a wonderful one as the place has been accredited with being a wealth of information and more so extra services which favor the interests of their customers in so many ways. These centers, therefore, are turning to be more beneficial and making the issue of tourism easy hence reducing chances and risks of visitors getting stranded or may be losing their target in their exploration moments. Visitors always have fun in plenty as they enjoy themselves in the place since they can eat, drink and step into the real fun. This makes the Centre provide the visitors with an excellent range of tourisms enjoyment (Davis, 2017). Its notable from reliable sources that Adelaides is managed by a group of volunteers who are ever ready to assist you with assistance ranging from brochures, directions, maps, journey planning and even maps that can help you as a tourist to make use of most of your time in the scenery.in addition, there is free push hire and wheelchair available for any interested individual. The public-sector and current events are also highlighted in the awesome orientation walk (Moreton-Robinson, 2017). A range of tourism information which is excellent is provided in Adelaide and South Australia. The staff who manage the visitor information center also offer t free introduction to the points of interest which are key in Adelaide. The staff of Adelaide is voluntary mainly because they are interested in helping people and also because of there a lot of benefits at the personal level that comes as a result of volunteering. Also, whenever you make a call at the information Centre, the volunteers are always available to provide any necessary assistance and offer any help when needed. Despite the fact that some people have always been uncomfortable that volunteers benefit from the free work they do, but according to the volunteers motive their main motive is to always serve others selflessly. They dont aim at giving their expertise for an exchange of material gain but for reaching those cant be able to afford (Moreton-Robinson, 2017). The customer experience in Adelaide, however, differs among different tourist since people have different tastes and preferences. In Adelaide tourist and information Centre, there are various avenues of attraction that can accommodate all needs of the visiting people or the tourists. There are the wine capital and the Australian food which have become a point of focus for most visitors due to its exciting nature and the superb climate. There is also the recent emergence of the festivals and night scene in the promising and the gorgeous land. This makes a trip to Adelaide a story to narrate for those aspiring to be there. The Victoria Square in the central Adelaide makes it the most significant landmark in the southern Australia with the several buildings and beautiful courts around the place. There is also improved and customized services for the visitors in Adelaide. Therefore, once the customers arrive at the information Centre, they are able to get warm experience which can help them from the beginning to the end. A management relationship system has been put in place to enable quick identification of customers by easily noting their primary needs and doing a recommendation of what services match their additional profile. This makes the customer service both productive and efficient which in turn makes the customers enjoy better services hence boosting their satisfaction. Well catered for accommodation and also places to stay for those tourists who wants to take a bit longer time in the land are also available. The places for accommodation have serviced apartments, hotels, holiday houses, luxury beds and foodstuffs. The visitor information centers make the place more convenient to visit. One is able to find out more about the tourist center through the tourist maps, brochures, and the friendly and well-trained staff that voluntarily serve the visitors in a very welcoming way (Australia, 2017). Despite all these advantages of having a good experience in the land of Adelaide, there are several things that are recommended to be done to make the services more reliable and efficient.to begin with, the center needs through expansion because it smaller compared to the massive number of tourists who find their way in the scenery. The visitor center is smaller and one can easily miss the place .Also, the number of tour guides for showing the tourists around and other visitors need to be increased so as to boost the service delivery and make the effectiveness of the tourists time in the center be maximized. The customer service too needs to maintain or improve their method of handling visitors .The comments from the tourist are very positive and inspiring and this boosts the image of the Centre (Davis, 2017). The visitors always have a good time and lovely moments with the well-structured group the volunteering personalities. If these issues are considered as recommended by many, Adelaide will maintain its standards of being the major tourist and information center in that part of the world. The experience of the visitors and people who have been there before can always give a testimony of the good times they had in scenery and have many reasons to go back and have a test of what they encountered one more time.

Rhetorical Language The Power Of Words - 1534 Words

Rhetorical Language: The Power of Words Ever since humans have existed, their ideas, and philosophies existed along with them; however, these ideas would split them into two groups, those who agree, and those who do not agree with the idea. Additionally, there are people who truly believe that everyone should believe in their ideology; therefore, will take certain measures to make people believe in their ideas. One certain measure is using their own words because words can have its own power. By using persuasive and rhetorical tactics, words can lead an army to victory. In addition, persuasive and rhetorical language has the power to make someone realize their opponent’s views regarding a certain topic because that’s what persuasive and rhetorical language does. What persuasive and rhetorical language does is to convince people to see their point of view. Many people have tried to define what persuasive and rhetorical language is. Early philosophers like Aristotle defin es what a good speaker and writer should be with ethos, pathos, and logos. American Airlines Free Essays

string(35) " for juvenile delinquents as well\." According to the Chinese Philosopher Xun Zi, Man is really evil in nature and can only be good if he is trained to be one (Co, 1992). This could be a main reason why rehabilitation and harsher punishments were imposed on different prison camps. However, another Chinese Philosopher in the name of Meng Zi tells us the opposite. We will write a custom essay sample on American Airlines or any similar topic only for you Order Now He tells us that Man is naturally good because he has a sense of pity, right and wrong, truth and falsity, and good end evil. Man is only tempted to commit mistakes because of negligence, wrong environment, and the willful desire to become evil (Co, 1992). This makes us realize that even if they commit mistakes and are proven responsible for that act, no matter how grave it is, they still deserve to be treated as man. Can our current approach to sentencing and corrections be successful and continue? Our current approach to sentencing and corrections can be successful, but not for a very long time as more people clamors for changes in the policies of the correctional system. In our present time, we believe that incarceration is the best way to rehabilitate an offender, but we were wrong as other methods can be used like fines, probation, community service, treatments and other sanctions (Stemen, 2007). The report of Mr. Don Stemens (2007) tells us that further intensification of incarceration is not the most effective way to increase safety in the community, since it only has less significant effects, and has greater effects on the taxpayers. From 1985 to 2004, it was recorded to hit a 202 percent increase. In one of the studies, it was even said that higher incarceration rates would mean higher crime rates. Furthermore, crime rate is really influenced by the economy, society, demography, culture, politics and incarceration rates of a county (Stemen, 2007). Still, the Declaration of Principles serves as the foundation of the country’s prison management for 100 years (Mega essays –). This Declaration is the result of the Cincinnati conference. Things in the crime and punishment system of the United States really changed after liberty in 1970’s. From the introduction of the first American penal colony in Philadelphia in 1870, to the prohibition of cutting body parts and other ways of torturing as a way of punishing the culprits, to the introduction of the Auburn Model, to the beginning of vocational training, education, parole, and the division between the prison cells for young and adult prisoners (Mega essays, n. d. ), the correctional system is doing its best to provide its citizens the security that they need (Raver, 2007). Other innovations would include the medical model of prison management and rebirth of indefinite sentencing. Another discovery is the indeterminate sentence method, where in every five days of good behavior would reduce one day of sentenced imprisonment for the convicted prisoners (Mega essays, n. d. ). As there are only town operated jails before they are the only department that can deal with felons (serious offenders) in the absence of state of federal prisons. Pain through the beating of physical punishments was applied to the prisoners. But instead of using pain, the country’s leaders would now want the convicts to be sanctioned from practicing their liberty (Mega essays, n. d. ). Aside from that, it is true that before, and in some cases, even today, convicted criminals were controlled and punished by intervention, ethical education, and isolation (Mega essays, n. d. ). Isolation would mean that they are not allowed to communicate with others, and will only get a chance to work with others without communicating again when working together in silent labor prison factories, just like what is according to the Auburn Model. The Auburn Model was first implemented in New York State prison. According to the Auburn Model, imprisonment of a convicted culprit must be the period for him or her to let her body and soul dominate that can be achieved through habit and regimentation provided by the very authoritative control system. But this did not happen as an environment of slavery was created in the prison camps. (Raver, E 2007). But this is already too much. From the report of Mr. Stemen, he mentioned about the report of Mr. Michael Jacobson, the Director of the Vera Institute of Justice. Mr. Jacobson said that harsher punishments and strengthened rules for imprisonment will decrease the threat imposed by the increase in crime rates. Insufficiency of the date is not a problem as they now have sufficient data to support their claim. When that time comes, then it would be easy for policy makers to understand complex policies. A 10 percent increase in the number of incarcerations would only decrease 2 to 4% decrease. From 1970 to 2005, an increase of 628 percent in the construction of state and federal institutions was reported, with a number of 1. 5 Million incarcerated criminals in U. S prisons and 750, 000 persons imprisoned in local jails per day. 5. 6 Million of the U. S population experienced being in prison. From 1992 to 1997, it was recorded to have a 25% effect in reduction of crimes, and the rest was caused by other reasons (Stemen, 2007). If they really want to reduce the crime rate, governments must focus on the increase in the number of police per capita, real wage rates, and education, and the decrease in unemployment rate (Stemen, 2007). Will rehabilitation continue as a primary correctional goal? Because on the belief of the efficacy of incarceration in the rehabilitation of prisoners, it is expected that more prison camps will be constructed which will come largely from the revenue collected by the states to go to this objective. In the 21st century, more funds are reserved for the construction of new penal colonies. In fact nowadays, they are more than the churches and the schools (Raver, 2007). The plan is that penal colonies will now provide different facilities that will further promote the rehabilitation of adult prisoners and for juvenile delinquents as well. You read "American Airlines" in category "Papers" Just like the North West Ohio Juvenile Detention, Training and Rehabilitation Center that has individual detention cells, control room, multi-purpose room, classrooms, intake area, nurse clinic, gymnasium, library, and a secured outdoor recreation area (Patrick, 2007). This will help the juveniles to develop their skills and talents while serving their sentence, so that once they are released, they will be able to help their community, the country. They have a highly structured curriculum where in the teachers are licensed by the Ohio Department of Education. There is an admission exam that will test their knowledge in math, science, and the language arts. This is for the placement in the Center’s computer based education curriculum. There is also the Accelerated reader program that will uphold their reading comprehension level that is suitable and proper to them. The Centre also has one hour per day organized group large muscle activity that that follows the 5139-37-18 of the Ohio Administrative Code. Aside form this. There are one hour additional recreational activities, calisthenics, and leisure activities. Group sessions and total family sessions were also held. Aside from that, they conduct mental health assessments, and counseling. But according to the findings of Senator Whitmire and Rep. Madden, the real problem of the increase in crime rate is no other than the faulty and weak criminal justice policies and practices (high revocation rates of probationers, lack of in-prison or community-based treatment and diversion options, and low parole grant rate). They think that what was done in the past is already enough. They think that the money should be more spent on more quality projects that the population can enjoy. Their goal is to lessen the expenses appropriated by the federal government in constructing too many prisons (The PEW Center on the States, 2008). The two legislators do not believe in building more prisons. For them, what is important is to treat the drug addicts, alcoholics, and to those individuals on parole and on probation that are having some difficult time coping with problems, this will prevent them to go out of the prison and eventually commit the same crime, or commit a new one (The PEW Center on the States 2008). Legislators instead must pass bills that will give correction agencies computers that will have Compstat program that will be used to trace their caseloads (Public Safety Performance 2007). Presently, more and more correctional agencies are emerging in the idea that they can help in the progress of public safety thru helping the offenders to complete their period of rehabilitation (The PEW Center of the States 2007). The expansion of the country’s prison system does not actually decrease crime rate if their aim is to only imprison many of the citizens without really reducing the rate of criminal offenses. It is said that incarceration is the best way to avoid one from doing crimes, but is not effective in punishing and debilitating those persons, but it works (Stemen, 2007). For example, it said that the imprisonment of drug criminals will defeat the purpose and efficacy of this system to decrease the crime rate. Its predominantly negative implication on drug criminals were also reported (Stemen, 2007). Will supervision of offenders in the community change on approach? What should be focused on is to provide the centers with different facilities where they can mold their talent, skills, etc. where they can use when they go out. In the Pennsylvania system, guards have a complete supervision of the prisoners in the centers (Mega essays, n. d. ). We cannot prevent that there might be some special incidents that can happened in the detention place, like acts of aggression, disorderly behavior, attempts of the juvenile to harm himself, and threats in security. This is where the guards are most needed. In 2007, it is recorded that there were 40 special incidents in the North West Ohio Juvenile Detention. But before doing all of this, they must first provide solution to the correctional system first. The Correctional system has different problems like its rising cost, the overcrowding of prison cells and the increased hazard for both the inmates and the correctional personnel (Raver, 2007). For example in Texas, they will have to a lot additional $900 million to add more beds in prison camps (The PEW Center on the States, 2008). Some of the solutions given to these problems were the following: First, prohibit the unsupervised release of the prisoners just to solve the overcrowding of convicts in the prison cells. This will rather increase the risk of the security of the citizens. It will be appropriate to have it supervised. In this way, the rehabilitation of the prisoner and the security of the community will not be at stake. When we say rehabilitation, this would include counseling, therapy and traditional probation (Raver, 2007). Second, White collar criminals or non-violent offenders do not need to be imprisoned anymore. This will only occupy space, and waste the money of the government (Raver, 2007). The parole system does not only let ex-convicts to enjoy a free life. Even if these people were already outside, the authorities still monitors them (Mega essays, n. d. ). They need to make sure that they will completely supervise them, just to prevent those persons to repeat their crimes, or to do another crime. But of course, this will not be easy for the released prisoners. But if this will not be prevented, if they commit the same mistakes, or does a new crime, it is important that the following must be considered first: the degree of the crime committed, the danger it imposed to the community, and the cost. Senior administrators must be there to review the violation, and most importantly issue policy and guidelines for responding to these parole related violations (The PEW Center of the States, 2007). Those under parole will find it very hard to earn some money and to find a permanent job because employers’ sets high standards that in some point they were not able to meet or they are just discriminated and pre-judged. If not, they are just limited to some certain dirty jobs, thus some of them would find solution by venturing into illegal jobs (Stemen 2007). Once again, the role of the authorities is important, especially the policy makers. Prison-based education programs will not only help the prisoners to change themselves, but it can also serve as a tool to prepare them before going inside and join their community. Another one is for the policy makers to train better probation and parole officers (Stemen 2007). Do we need a new paradigm for sentencing and corrections? It is suggested that the kind of system that the United States have must be re-examined and re-evaluated based on its total performance (Raver, E 2007) The prison system in the eyes of the convicts is inefficient in terms of really playing its purpose because of some hostilities inside the penal colonies which should not happen. The facility should train, educate, and mold the person to a person that is ready to face the challenges if the time comes that he’ll leave the prison. But this is not what is really happening in these places (Raver, 2007). Community corrections agency are expected to produce report at least once a month, but instead the report contains only a list of their activities annually. Community corrections agency is expected that they should have a system to determine and manage movement towards the prevention of crime and addiction. They should not only monitor the progress of paroled person, and the individual managers in their effort to promote the achievement of their objectives. Incentives will also be given to managers and staff (Public Safety Performance, 2007). So far, it is said that the United States has the highest rate of incarceration amounting to 450 people for each 100, 000 people (Mega essays, n. d. ). The effects of increased incarceration rates will still be affected by different factors such as the range of in state prisons population, which has actually less effect and crime rate (Stemen, 2007). In Florida, both the rate of crime rate, and the rate of incarceration increased, that eventually destroys the society, especially the family, steals the time of some imprisoned parents to take care of their children, and can also take the present and future income of the community where this people belong, and would only cater to the feeling of bitterness towards the present legal system, thus overall creating social disorder that makes way for the further push of crime rates in a higher level (Stemen, 2007). The North West Ohio Juvenile Detention, Training and Rehabilitation Center accepts into its custody those delinquents that is physically and emotionally threatened or hurt, run away child, abandoned child, and or is ordered by court, as stated in the Rule 7 of the Ohio Ruled of Juvenile Procedure. Other private institutions and groups that give leadership training and change for the youth, family, and the community, should increase their role in this issue. What the government cannot provide, they can supply (Stemen, 2007). What the citizens think now is to make some policies that will quickly respond to the real cause of crime and not just simply facing it. In a survey in 1994, 48% believes on this, that later on increased by 2001 reaching a rate of 65%. On the other hand, 42% believe that using a harsher sentence will decrease crime rate, and became 32% in 2001 (Stemen, 2007). They suggest that authorities must reconsider their thoughts about incarceration, that they must consider more the mentioned aspects in policy making (Stemen 2007). Can we reduce the impact of prisonization and improve the successful reentry of prisoners to the community? Yes we can. Treatment of services, conditions and intensity of supervision, release, and responses to violations are appropriately assigned which paves the way for an increase in crime rate because of its inefficiency. They should be supervised heavy-handedly grave offenders, and light-handedly on those light offenders, with no intensive interventions included (The PEW Center of the States, 2007). But the establishment of institutions like The Bureau of Federal Prisons, and structures like Alcatraz were primarily built as a way to decrease the crime rate in the country, and to make sure that the most dangerous criminals are caught and kept imprisoned. This is the only way that the federal government can answer the challenge of those big time criminals who have more power and weapons than the law enforcers (Raver, 2007). The common problem for those freed convicted criminals is that they were viewed by others as a threat or danger to the peace and orderliness of the community. Some of them are always imprisoned, whether they commit another crime, or they repeat what they did. The people from the community believe that instead of changing into a better person, which should be the real purpose of imprisonment, they only got worst inside, which reflects the people’s disappointment in the country’s correctional system (Raver, 2007). Policy makers should have a statistics of the percentage of those who were revoked for violating the rules of their parole, and the percentage of those who were revoked for committing new crimes. Judges, the parole board and the agency must be well coordinated in order to prepare the prisoner for the world outside the prison and detention center. They should continuously promote the prevention of crime, and not just the revocation of supervision (The PEW Center of the States, 2007). It is also said that consequences for different violations are not maximized. Policy makers must make sure that every violation is faced with an appropriate punishment. It is said that in order for supervision agencies to react appropriately to the needs of the culprit, they must have community based services and sanctions. They can use electronic monitoring or day reporting centers (The PEW Center of the States, 2007). Aside from providing the needed facilities for the prisoners, they must, at the same time, evaluate the third generation instruments that can unchangeable and changeable. It is concluded in one report that rewards are more effective than penalties in molding one’s behavior (The PEW Center of the States 2007). They can also use incentives that will encourage the prisoners to comply with the conditions and to prohibit themselves from doing another crime or repeating the crime again. It can be in a form of gift, certificates, reducing the treatment requirements, and minimal supervision (The PEW Center of the States 2007). Pyramids and Ziggurats free essay sample

Pyramidal construction is as old as Egyptian history itself, going back to the beginning of the 3rd millennium B. C. , when the first monarchs were buried in large brick tombs called mastabas. These can be seen as evoking the primeval hill related to the conceptions of the very beginnings of life. In the 3rd dynasty (c. 2660-2600 B. C. ) king Netjerirkhet Djoser introduced the pyramidal shape with a great monument fashioned as a Step Pyramid, built with stone by his genius architect Imhotep within a vast funerary complex in the Sakkara area, close to Memphis, the capital. The innovation was not only its shape – six overlaying mastabas – but also it made ample use of stone and was placed at the centre of an enormous walled complex. This complex also contained a cenotaph or subsidiary tomb on the south side, evoking the holy city of Abydos especially noted for the cult of Osiris, god of Eternity. This concept of a subsidiary tomb would later evolve into the small satellite pyramids built next to the Royal Tombs, to the south. The 4th dynasty (c. 2600-2500 B. C. registers remarkable advances, not only in terms of architectural splendour but also as far as technical innovation is concerned, most evident in the internal layout of the Royal Tombs and in the surrounding complexes. The transition between the Step Pyramid and the Pure Pyramid which will become the standard can be seen in the unfinished and much damaged Meidum pyramid which was probably commissioned by the pharaoh Huni, last monarch of the 3rd dynasty, and to Sneferu, founder of the 4th . Sneferu ordered the construction of the two pyramids at Dashoor, which show a marked architectural evolution of the royal tomb: one is of the rhomboid type and the other, known as the â€Å"Red Pyramid†, is the first Pure Pyramid. Later on, on the Giza Plateau the three most famous pyramids in Egypt (and in the whole world) were erected for kings Khufu, Khafre and Menkaure (also known by their Greek names Cheops, Chephren and Mycerinus, although these onomastic forms are losing ground). The Khufu pyramid, known as the Great Pyramid, is remarkable not only on account of its size (it originally stood 147 metres high) and of the â€Å"astronomic† precision of its implantation (the four sides face the four cardinal directions with almost perfect precision) but also for the originality of its internal structure and layout. Contrary to previous usage, the Royal Chamber was moved towards the interior, after a first attempt, left unfinished, of placing it underground and slightly off-centre. The central position would be occupied at a later stage by the â€Å"Queen’s Chamber†, but this option too would be abandoned. Finally, the most spectacular of pyramidal architectural solutions would be devised: a great ascending gallery leading to the Royal Chamber, the construction of which bespeaks of high technical skills in adjusting the huge stones and of a perfect mastery in finishing them. The Khafre pyramid originally stood 143 metres high, and the Menkaure pyramid, the smallest one at Giza, stood at 65 metres. The relative simplicity of the interiors of the pyramids built for Khafre and Menkaure both antedates and announces the organisation typical of the 5th and 6th dynasties’ pyramids while maintaining the funerary complex’s typical layout. The number of the small surrounding pyramids built for the royal wives varies. During the 5th dynasty (c. 2500-2300 B. C. ) the favoured location for erecting pyramids was the Abusir area, although the first monarch (Userkaf) and the last (Unas) had their tombs built in Sakkara. The smaller scale of the royal pyramids is obvious when compared to those of the previous dynasty, but the funerary complexes were still impressive, particularly on account of their excellent and varied mural decoration both in the funerary temples and along the paved processional causeways. An example of this is Sahure, the complex of which can be considered a paradigm of its epoch: the entrance of the pyramid faces north, the internal structure is stepped, and the architecturally simple royal chamber is positioned in the centre, level with the ground. The Unas pyramid is decorated internally with magical texts, which will later become customary (the famous  «Pyramid Texts »). In the 6th dynasty (c. 2300-2180 B. C. ) pyramids were built with approximately 50 metres in height. In spite of its poor present condition, the funerary complex of Pharaoh Pepy II can give us an idea of the spatial distribution typical of the period. It has a cult pyramid, located by a canal leading to the Nile, an ascending, paved processional causeway linking the cult pyramid to the funerary temple. The latter, after the first annexes, gave onto an elegant hypostyle patio and a chapel with several niches containing statues of the king. Beyond the encircling wall delimiting the Royal Pyramid, there is a series of small pyramids built for his consorts, each pyramid with its own funerary temple. After Pepy II, many decades elapsed before anything deserving the name of pyramid was erected. This would only happen during t he Middle Kingdom – after the First Intermediate Period – when traces of pyramid construction are scant: we know of a modest pyramid built in Sakkara for king Qakare Ibi, of the 8th dynasty (under 20 metres high), and although no traces of such a monument have reached our day and age, literary tradition speaks of a pyramid, built for Merikare, of the 10th dynasty, located by the Teti funerary complex, in Sakkara. In the Middle Kingdom (c. 2040-1750 B. C. the mighty monarchs of the 12th dynasty have pyramids erected in the Fayum area (Meidum, Lahun, Licht and Hawara), notably the tombs of Senuseret I at Licht and Amenemhat III at Hawara. The average height of 12th dynasty pyramids is 100 metres, but they are mainly composed of an amass of rubble, loose stone blocks and brick, capped with polished limestone facing slabs, and they have long disinte grated into an inexpressive heap of ruins. The building of pyramids for pharaohs was abandoned during the New Kindgom (c. 1550-1070 B. CB. ), in favour of tombs excavated in rock hillsides (Valley of the Kings, in West Thebes). And when the habit of hollowing-out hillsides to build tombs died out, some officials erected small brick pyramids over their funerary chapels thus appropriating some of the pharaonic symbology. Obelisks, those elegant monoliths of solar evocation, were topped by pyramid-shaped points, capped with metal. The kings of the 25th dynasty (c. 715-660 B. C. ), of Nubian origin (present-day Sudan), had their tombs built in the shape of pyramids, smaller in size and thinner. This archaic practice was continued further south by the kings of Meroe who, over a period of 1,000 years, would build pproximately 180 pyramids where some remnants of artistic production of the merotic kingdom were found. Besides the scientific study of ancient Egypt’s pyramids (pyramidology) there is a parallel approach best described as â€Å"pyramid mania†, which has produced many distorted, even appalling interpretations of the pharaonic pyramids and their purpose. One of the most non-sensical and inco nsistent has to do with the purported relationship between Egypt and Central America, which apparently led to the construction of pyramids in both regions. The truth is that there is a long-established practice of calling pyramids to the stepped constructions built in stone in Central America until the 16th century, the date of Spanish penetration. The oldest is the Cuicuilco pyramid, close to Mexico City (the old Tenochtitlan), which may well date from the end of the 2nd millennium B. C.. It has five stories topped by a sanctuary accessed by the exterior. This long access stairway petrifies a magical conception, evoking a link between the world of the gods and that of Man. Along the stairs, the celestial gods descend, and the infernal gods climb. And so does the priest who was to officiate atop the monument in one of the most characteristic ceremonies of the different Mexican civilisations: the offering of the human heart to the gods. Thousands of captives were killed each year at the top of those pyramid-shaped temples, their hearts torn out while they still lived and their bodies thrown down the stairs. The sacred connotation of the stairs themselves is echoed in the number of steps of the great stairway of the Kukulcan pyramid at Chichen Itza: 364, plus the upper platform where the sanctuary stood, which was considered day 365. As for the number of stories, they could be between seven and thirteen figures with celestial and symbolic significance. The Paleo-Mexican pyramids, erected by several peoples in the region (from the Mayas to the south, to the Toltecs, the Olmecs, the Zapotecs, the Totonacs and the Aztecs, among others) are massive structures, which in some cases were successfully added in height. A good example of this is the Aztec pyramid of Tenayuca, which reveals at least six stages in vertical and horizontal extension. In an impressive contrast of vertical and horizontal lines, the pyramids can look massive and immense such as the Temple of the Sun at Palenque, or rise in steep verticality as in the Great Tikal Plaza (Guatemala). The highest Mexican pyramid was erected at Cholula (in its initial stages, an Olmec site), and was consecrated to Quetzalcoatl, wise and beneficial god. There are important zones of pyramid concentrations at Chichen Itza (pyramid of Kukulcan, the Maya name of the Aztec god Quetzalcoatl, the Feathered Serpent), at Palenque, Teopalzolco, Monte Alban,  «city of pyramids » in Teotihuacan, an urban centre, which started out as Olmec. The Temple of the Inscriptions at Palenque proved to be an eight-story pyramid after the thick overgrowth was removed (1949). It also revealed in its interior, through a staircase that ran from the top of the structure to the underground level, a funerary chamber with a sarcophagus containing what was thought to be the body of a king. Several valuables had been buried with the personality and thus this vast pyramid-shaped tomb is the exception confirming the rule: Mexican pyramids are places of cult, while the Egyptian ones are clearly royal tombs. In point of fact, there is no relationship between the concepts presiding over the construction of pyramidshaped structures in the two opposite sides of the Atlantic. Indeed, there is no correspondence, whether in time or in space, between two worlds of such clearly distinct cultures. Furthermore, the function of the Egyptian and the Mexican pyramids are completely different, the latter seeming to have served some of the purposes achieved by the great towers erected in Mesopotamia by the Sumerians, the Assyrians and the Babylonians between 3000 and 500 B. C. , known as ziggurats. Hence we can state that, functionally and culturally, the Mexican pyramid is closer to the Mesopotamian ziggurat than to the Egyptian pyramid.

1920s and the Great Depression free essay sample

Great Depression contrasted each-other in many ways when it came to the economy, social, and politics. In the 1920’s the economy was at its high point. The unemployment rate was below 5% and new inventions were coming out all the time. People could always go out and have a good time whether it was a baseball game or going to the movies. By the end of the 1920’s and into the great depression, people were lucky if you could do these things once a year. During the great depression 30% of people in the United States were without a job and the economy had hit rock bottom. The economy during the 1920’s was at its high point with new inventions, people could afford everything because of installment plans, and almost everyone was invested in the stock market. In the 1920’s many new things were coming out. Radios allowed people to listen to music or sports games, assembly lines helped to make new products faster and cheaper, Airplanes were being flown from country to country, and Traffic Lights were being used to help control traffic. We will write a custom essay sample on 1920s and the Great Depression or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Even simple things like cheeseburgers or toasters were invented at this time and it was all helping the economy boom. This was also when installment plans came out. Installment plans are credit systems where payment for merchandise/items is made in installments over a pre-approved period of time. Because of this, people could afford everything and pay it back at a later time. Installment plans were especially helpful in purchasing things like the Ford Model T Car. The stock market also played a huge role during this time. People were buying stocks and were almost certainly guaranteed to make more money. Almost everyone at this time was invested in the stock market and some had their whole life savings put into it. It was a get rich quick system that no one expected to fail. They probably should have been a bit more cautious. The economy during the great depression was completely opposite from the 1920s. The stock market had crashed, bank failures left people with no money, and the domino effect of purchasing goods made people lose even more jobs. One of the biggest reasons the economy was booming in the 1920s was because of the stock market, until it crashed. Two months after the original crash in October, stockholders had lost more than $40 billion dollars. Even though the stock market began to regain some of its losses, by the end of 1930, it just was not enough and America truly had entered the Great Depression. The crash of the stock market left people scrambling for their money. Because of this, throughout the great depression over 9,000 banks failed. Bank deposits were uninsured and thus as banks failed people simply lost their savings. Surviving banks, unsure of the economic situation and concerned for their own survival, stopped being as willing to create new loans. This caused lots of people to be without much money and they just couldnt afford to spend money on things they didnt need. Because of this individuals from all classes stopped purchasing items. This then led to a reduction in the number of items produced and then a reduction in jobs because companies couldnt afford to keep their employees. As people lost their jobs, they were unable to keep up with paying for items they had bought through installment plans and they lost these things. The unemployment rate skyed up to 30% which meant even less spending for people. The economy had hit rock bottom and the great depression left people without money, jobs, and in a lot of cases their house. In the ‘roaring twenties’ social life was changing rapidly with things like baseball games, movies, and new types of music. Baseball is what people call ‘americas pastime’ because anyone could afford it and it was for any and all people. Baseball got really popular during this time and attendance was at its highest. Also during this time people were turning to movies as new forms of movies were being made. Movies werent short anymore and in most cases now had audio. People were fascinated by this and movies became a very popular thing in the 1920s. Lastly, new forms of music were also coming out. The â€Å"jazz age† featured many new artists and a new form of music called ‘jazz’ that was very fun and later turned into ‘pop’. Because of new inventions like the radio people could listen to Jazz at all times and it became VERY popular. During the great depression though, people could no longer afford all these things so social life began to change. People could maybe afford to see a movie once a year. Baseball attendance was at its lowest because people simply couldnt afford it anymore. Most people still had a radio to listen to music but it wasnt the same as going out to watch an artist. The great depression forced a lot of people to not have this type of entertainment anymore because of how poor everyone had become. In the 1920s, all the presidents were good and the economy was booming. Also during this time, new laws were coming out which all helped further the economy and help make United States a better country after world war one. The Palmer raids, the Red Scare, a drive to get â€Å"reds out of the country† began on January 3, 700 people were arrested. Shortly after this the 18th Amendment went into effect, prohibiting the making, selling, possessing, and drinking of alcoholic beverages. This would then be repealed in 1933. By the 1920s, many Americans had grown tired of war and constant attempts at reform, including numerous attempts to pass moral legislation. Many people wanted a simpler way of life. Warren G. Hardings policy was a return to normalcy which helped him win the 1921 election. In 1924 after Hardings death, Calvin Coolidge would win the election by a landslide and helped the economy out further. Four years later in 1928 Herbert Hoover won the election promising to build upon the booming economy Coolidge had left. He would then remain the president until the great depression. During the great depression people wanted someone to blame and Hoover was the one people chose to because he was the President. Because of this president FDR won the next election easily as he promised a new start. Immediately FDR got to work in restoring the economy with the 1st new deal. These series of economic programs he initiated between 1933 and 1936 had the goals of giving work to the unemployed, reform of business and financial practices. He would then get to work on a second new deal which included labor union support, the WPA relief program, the Social Security Act, and programs to aid farmers. Because of these things he was able to get people jobs, the unemployment rate was cut in half by 1936 and in 1942 was down to less than 3%. FDR had restored faith in the economy and the country was back up and strong. The 1920s and the great depression were far different from each other in lots of ways. The economy had gone from the best it had ever been to the worst in just a few years and the economy was at its low point. For 10 years 30 percent of people in America were without jobs and many people didnt even have a place to live. FDR helped establish the economy again and by 1946 the country was in top shape. Only a percent of people were without jobs and United States and the economy was restored.
